Captain of the 145th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War. Died from wounds inflicted at the Battle of Fredericksburg, December 1862. Papers include a manuscript copy of a "personal memoir" about Brown, written in 1869 by Samuel P. Bates, Pennsylvania state historian, and various pieces of correspondence to and from Brown's family in Erie, Pennsylvania. Also includes letters to and from his father, Conrad Brown, after Washington's death concerning the funeral arrangements, and a manuscript copy of Brown's last words.
